DD-WRT Router Access Point
Posted by Greg M on 28 June 2017 11:09 AM
The following instructions will guide you through a configuration of a PPTP or L2TP connection on a DD-WRT compatible router being used as an access point. There are hundreds of routers compatible with DD-WRT, please check the router database on the DD-WRT website for more information.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: We cannot be held responsible for damage caused by clients configuring incompatible routers. Please only install official DD-WRT firmware from the DD-WRT website onto compatible routers. Before you attempt to configure your router please setup a PPTP connection on your computer to ensure the account is working.

Step 1

Login to your router and check your DD-WRT version is "v24-sp2" or higher.

Step 2
Click the "Setup" tab.

Step 3

Select PPTP from the 'Connection Type' drop down.

Step 4
Select "Use DHCP"

Step 5
Enter the IP address we gave you into the "Gateway (PPTP Server)" field.

Step 6
Enter your VPN username and password into the "User Name" and "Password" fields.

Step 7
Make sure the PPTP Encryption is "Enabled"

Step 8
Ensure "STP" is set to "Disable"

Step 9
Enter an IP address for the DD-WRT access point.
NOTE: You need to choose an IP that will not not conflict with your main routers IP address. For example, if your main router is 192.168.11.1, you can make the access point 192.168.51.1 - You would then have to use that IP address to login to the DD-WRT administration area once you have applied the changes.

Step 10
Set the "Subnet Mask" to "225.225.225.0"

Step 11
Make sure the "DHCP Server" is set to "Enable"
Note: You can leave the static DNS on 0.0.0.0 if you wish to use your default DNS servers. If you have problems with your ISP hijacking your DNS, you can change the Static DNS to Google DNS by entering DNS 1 as 8.8.8.8 and DNS 2 as 8.8.4.4

Step 12
Uncheck - 'Use DNSMasq for DNCP', 'Use DNSMasq for DNS' and 'DHCP-Authoritative'.

Step 13
Click the 'Apply Settings' Button.
Note: If you changed the IP address of the DD-WRT router in step 9 you will have to login to that new IP address in order to continue with the DD-WRT setup after clicking the 'Apply Settings' button.

Step 14
Click on the "Security" tab at the top of your screen.

Step 15
Select "Disable" in the SPI Firewall option.

Step 16
Scroll to the bottom of the page and click "Apply Settings"

Step 17
Click the "VPN Passthrough" tab.

Step 18
Make sure the "PPTP Passthrough" option is "Enabled"

Step 19
Click "Apply Settings"

Step 20
Click on the "Administration" tab

Step 21
Scroll to the bottom of the page and click "Reboot Router".  Its also good to reboot your main router too.

Done.
