What is a proxy server?
Posted by Eddie Gibbs on 25 October 2012 09:38 PM
A proxy server is a machine that sits between your computer and the web server that is hosting the pages you are accessing. It holds an archive (called a 'cache') of the most popular recently accessed pages. These pages can then be accessed by your computer far quicker than being requested from the original web server.

Proxy systems are designed to speed up localised file requests, reduce international bandwidth restrictions, and ease the load on web and file transfer protocol (FTP) servers.
